Self- Evident Truths

"If the laws of God and man are of no effect, when the magistracy is left at liberty to break them: and if the lusts of those who are too strong for the tribunals of justice, cannot be otherwise restrained than by sedition, tumults and war, those seditions, tumults and wars are justified by the laws of God and man."

Algernon Sidney
Discourses Concerning Government
c 1682
A major influence on the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the American experiment.

  1. "Natural Rights and Laws" are based on reason and logic. Adding superstition to the mix negates the entire concept.
Which laws, handed down by the priests of all the multitude of Gods that mankind has ever fashioned and worshiped, shall we accept as divine law?

  2. Natural Rights and Laws come from God which is why they are reasonable and logical. Man has it written in his heart. This tradition, so well exemplified by Sidney, demonstrates that it is the opposite of superstition. The world learned this sad reality in 1793.

  3. So I ask again ... "Which God?" There are a pantheon of them. Even the God of Moses wrote on His tablets "Thou Shall Have No Gods Before Me" which infers that there certainly are others.
